Samuel Ellis Jones Timeline
Samuel Ellis Jones was born on July 28, 1904, in Cave City, Arkansas, to Marion Francis Jones and Fanny Shaw-Jones, originally from Tennessee.
In 1910, he was living in Bird, Arkansas, with his biological parents, but at around six years of age, his mother died, and John and Parilee Johnson adopted him.
By 1920, Samuel was still living with the Johnsons in Sullivan, Arkansas, and working as a farmer on the homestead.
In 1924, he married Mary 'Mildred' Azzela Elkins in Cushman, Independence, Arkansas, and together they had six children, though one was lost before birth. Their surviving children were Geneva, Marie, Ina, Ray, and Clifton.
In 1930, Samuel was 24, and his family lived in Miller, Seminole, Oklahoma, where he worked as a farmer.
By 1940, the family had moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where Ellis worked as a Lease Foreman, owned their own home, and had an 8th-grade education.
In February 1942, Samuel registered for the draft in Wichita Falls, Texas.
In 1945, he moved his family to Arizona, where they lived in Maricopa, and he found work as a farmhand. Ellis later worked as a greenskeeper for a local golf course.
Unfortunately, the family suffered several tragedies, including the loss of their son Clifton in a single-engine airplane crash in 1960 at age 23, daughter Geneva to alcoholism in 1971 at age 45, and daughter Marie to a heart attack in 1983 at age 56. Ina lived to the age of 77 and Ray to 84.
In 1974, at their 50th wedding anniversary, he and Mildred lived at 205 S 79th Street in Mesa.
Ellis passed away on May 27, 1975, at a hospital in Phoenix. He is buried in Mesa Cemetery alongside his wife, Mildred, who died in 1993. - Made By Graves
