Enrolled 29 JUN 1861 in the 16th Massachusetts Infantry, signed on at Cambridge, MA. On 29 JUN 1861 he mustered into "H" Co. MA 16th Infantry.
He was Killed in action on 02 JUL 1863 at Gettysburg, PA
ae 20 YRS.

Lumen's regiment was on the front line on the Emmitsburg road on the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, commanded by Gen. Joseph Carr. The Confederate Gen. Longstreet attacked with cannon and infantry with its main thrust at Emmitsburg Rd. Gen Carr's line caught in a crossfire fell back to Cemetery Ridge. Lumen was killed on Emmitsburg Road. His body was returned to Marlborough, Mass. The Sixteenth Mass. Infantry sustained a loss of 16 officers, one hundred and thirty-four enlisted men killed. an additional 2 officers and 93 enlisted men died from disease and non-battlefield causes.
