Mustered into Co.D, Houston, TX., September 7, 1861.
Promoted/appointed to armorer by November 1862.
Accidentally injured due to fall from 2-story house near Alexandria, TN. in April 1863.
Present in February 1864 as master armorer.
Received gunshot wound to body and arm in August 1864 (or possibly on July 30, 1864), likely near Newnan, GA.
Promoted to First Lieutenant.
Wounded nine times and captured at Atlanta (possibly).
Captured near Alpharetta, GA., in September 1864.
Forwarded to Johnson's Island, OH., October 1864.

Elected Sheriff of Travis County, TX. in 1866 but was deposed by military authority.

He was the owner of the land that would eventually become the LBJ Ranch.

Due to his influence as a land developer, he started the title company, Zimpelman and Bergen; which would eventually become the land title company Gracy Title Company, after Zimpelman retired.

Birth: Hufscorfbei Germany, July 24, 1832. Son of John Jacob Zimpelman and Maria SalomeHochdoeffer (daughter of Valentine Hochdoeffer.) 1st migrated to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1846. Worked as a Clerk in a dry goods store. Moved to Austin, Texas in 1847. Worked as a Master Carpenter. Learned the trade of Gunsmith.In 1856 he located on a stock farm in the vicinity of Austin, and became active in agriculture and stock raising. Husband of Sarah Katherine Matthews of Austin,Texas.
