Hugh Columbus Young was born November 21st, 1906 in Meridian, Idaho to Hughey Columbus Young and Mary E. Bayliss. His mother was committed to the Idaho State Insane Asylum in 1908, and his father took his own life in 1910. After his father's death, Mrs. Latham Deck took the 4 children to live with their maternal grandmother, Martha S. Tennessee Webb in Stafford, MO. After Martha's death in 1917, the children were left orphans. The family story is that they were sent to an orphanage in St. Louis which was destroyed by a fire, and all records were lost. Hugh lived his entire life believing his mother had died in childbirth, when in actuality, she lived until 1935 in the asylum.

Hugh lived with his brother, Diamond Young, briefly, then moved to Springfield, MO, where he met my grandmother, Mary Etho Watson. Hugh and Mary Etho were married in 1941, and two this union two children were born: Charles R. Young, stillborn, and my father, David Hugh Young.

Hugh and Mary Etho opened the Manhattan Dinner House in Springfield, MO in 1947.

Hugh and Mary Etho divorced in 1950, and Hugh moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where he was the Laundry Manager for the Town House Hotel. In 1951, Hugh remarried to Rubenia M Wilkerson. Hugh and Rubenia had a child, Nora Lea (1953-1973), who sadly died in a car accident.

He passed away at the age of 70 in Kansas City, KS.
