He also volunteered as a member of the West Bloomfield Fire Department, where he died in the line of duty. According to information received from the fire department in 2014, his wife survives. Trinity Methodist Church hosted the funeral. Dan Miller, West Bloomfield Volunteer and a founder of the Tri-City Fire Department drove the "Flower Car" to Mayville.

Herbert L. "Red" Morgan, a West Bloomfield Fire Chief, Oakland County Sheriff Deputy, and a founding Fire Chief of the Tri-City Fire Department, was Cal’s best friend. Red donated the land for "Baxter-Morgan Park," a city park in Keego Harbor that includes playground equipment and sports fields, to honor the memory of his friend. Photos of the park can be found on the internet.
