DR. HARRY V. BICE, CEREBRAL PALSY EXPERT, PSYCHOLOGIST
Dr. Harry V. Bice, a nationally acknowledged authority on the education of the cerebral palsied, died Sunday. He was a resident of West Milford.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War I. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Temple University, he attended Drew University, where he received a doctor of divinity degree. He then entered the Methodist Ministry in Winslow Township and Asbury. He also became minister and headmaster of the Meisenheimer School in Meisenheimer, N.C.
At age 38, Dr. Bice entered the University of North Carolina, where he received a master of science degree and doctorate in psychology. He then returned to the Army medical corps as an officer and psychologist.
He worked with wounded soldiers and those with battlefield trauma in Army hospitals in Kentucky during World War II.
Returning to New Jersey in 1946, he joined the New Jersey Department of Health as a clinical psychologist specializing in cerebral palsied children. He developed basic psychological testing techniques, which led to the development of individual programs for the education of impaired children. He also was the author of several textbooks, special publications, and articles on his testing techniques. In addition, he was a visiting professor at a number of universities.
Dr. Bice retired to West Milford in 1957, and continued his work as a volunteer for the Easter Seal program, assisting local churches in child-impairment cases. He received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Jersey City State College in 1961 and became a fellow and life member of the American Association on Mental Deficiency.
Surviving are his wife, Ada R.; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services were Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in West Milford. Arrangements are by Richard's Funeral Home, West Milford.
