Born in Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH, he is the son of Alonzo Leslie “Lon” Sly and Mary Rebecca Wessel. Nearby lived his father’s brother, David’s Uncle, Andrew Earlin Sly and to this Andrew was born a son Leonard Franklin Sly on 05 Nov 1911. David’s first cousin, Leonard went to Hollywood and changed his name to “Roy Rogers,” and the rest is history.
