Charles Francis Kelley, III
Of Wilmington, DE, died on the morning of Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at Forwood Manor, at the age of 87.
He was born on May 9, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY, to Agnes and Charles Kelley, II. He attended Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, NY, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Colgate University, graduating in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 5, 1941, and was honorably discharged on November 11, 1942 to accept a commission on November 12, 1942. After completing Officer Candidate School in North Carolina, he served in the Pacific Theater as a Unit Commander for an Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Unit, participating in the Philippine Island and Ryukyu Island campaigns. On February 15, 1946, he was given Honorable Relief from Active Duty, and attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, completing his Master of Business Administration in 1947. He then relocated to Wilmington, DE, to join E. I. duPont, de Nemours and Company. On December 11, 1950, he returned to active duty with the United States Army as a Battery Executive Officer and was stationed in Hertfordshire, UK, until receiving Honorable Relief from Active Duty on April 30, 1952. He then returned to Wilmington and the du Pont Company, where he worked until retiring in 1982. On September 3, 1955, he married Beatrice Anne Bright, originally of Elizabeth, NJ, then also of Wilmington, DE. They had a daughter, Anne Russell Kelley, on November 22, 1957, and a son, Douglas Arthur Charles Kelley, on February 23, 1963.
He is survived by his wife, his daughter and her family, (husband, James Michael Gill, II and daughter, Elizabeth Anne Gill), of Madison, CT; and his son and his family, (wife, Emily Lavinia McFarland, expecting the birth of their son in May, 2007), of San Francisco, CA.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, March 5, 2007 at 3 pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions in Charles' memory.
