Helen graduated from Newport High School in 1937, and went to work for the Borden Company in Newport, NY, and later the A&P Company in Rome, NY. While in Rome she met and fell in love with Fred P. Hummel. Fred and Helen were married in Newport on July 28, 1947. Theirs was a blessed union of 40 years, ended by Fred's sudden death on September 9, 1987.
