Paul B. Conley, 39, Succumbs to Pneumonia

Darlington, Wis., July 14- Attorney Paul B Conley, 39, former "fighting" district attorney of Lafayette County, died Tuesday night at his home after a short illness of pneumonia.
Conley, who was a boxer when he was at the University of Wisconsin with the class of 1924, carried his fighting tactics into the district attorney's office here in 1927, and directed most of his blows against bootleggers.
Once, after he had directed a raid on 19 liquor dispensaries in Lafayette County, a car drove up beside his and four rifle bullets were fired at him. He threw himself out of the line of fire and escaped with only a grazed arm.
Later, he staged a story book maneuver to solve two major crimes in the county. Conley hired a Milwaukee detective to stage a holdup at Argyle, get "caught" and be thrown in jail with a man being held for rape, but also believed a suspect in an arson case.
The "holdup" went off so well that a passerby got a gun and started pursuit, but Conley, on the watch, intervened to prevent any trouble. The "holdup" man went to jail with the man being held, and posing as a tough guy, got the man to confess both crimes.
Conley, lifelong resident of Darlington, attended St John's military academy before he went to the university. He built up a reputation as an amateur boxer.
He was district attorney for two terms, from 1927 to 1930, and has practiced law here with his father E.F. Conley.
Surviving are his wife, Helen, and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 Friday morning in Holy Rosary Church. Rev. Bernard Doyle, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Rosary cemetery.
