Hays -- Herman Niernberger, 82, died July 17, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays. He was born Oct. 14, 1917, at Ellis, the son of Leo and Magdelena Herman Niernberger.

A Hays resident for 13 years, moving from Ellis, he was a farmer. He belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both at Ellis. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include: three sons, Art, Arlin, Tracy, Calif., and Arnold, Wichita; a brother, Clyde, Wichita; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Joe, Hubert, Robert, Elmer, Scott and Ed; and a sister, Josephine.

Private services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, with Fathers Michael Suchnicki and Paulinus Karlin presiding. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ellis. Cline's Mortuary of Hays was in charge of arrangements.
