Son of Joseph Taber and Phebe Ashley. Like his older brothers, Stephen, Abram, Jacob and Phineas, he went to sea and became a master mariner in the whaling industry.
He married Olive C. Ashley in New Bedford, Massachusetts on May 10, 1854.
