Arthur was born to Fred Henry Fields of Texas and Minnie Lee McCleery born in Newton County, Missouri. The family story told by Grandpa was that his father was robbed and killed on his way home from a stock sell. He raised Belgium horses and sold them as they were used in the fields and pulling heavy loads in a wagon. The story says that Minnie identified him by his dark curly hair. Grandpa said his family was from Texas with strong Native American heritage. No grave has ever been found but my Aunt Willa Bess Miller Chambers said she was told the native family members came and buried him.
Grandpa shows up on the 1880 Census at the age of 3 years as a Fields. Minnie Lee remarried to James M. Miller. Grandpa shows up as a step son and then later as adopted being raised with the last name of Miller. In the 1900 Census Arthur shows up in 2 separate Census with Minnie and Darsie/Daisy Miller as being the mother. We now have learned that Darsie and Daisy were separate people yet related to Grandpa, possibly cousins.
Arthur would join the Army and became a Sgt in the kitchen and heading up those great meals that were cooked for those who came to the mess hall to eat, cooking was something in which he continued doing especially on river banks where his passion was fishing and preaching the gospel. Feeding the belly and the souls of men!
He often spoke of his near death episode with tuberculosis. In the hospital and to sick to remain on the patient floor he was placed in the basement with the others near death waiting on their passing. Grandpa said he saw a bright light and the Lord spoke to him. He agreed to devote his life to his service if he would heal him in which he recovered and preached to the end of his life. At this time we have not found any record of this hospital event. I remember being a small child and gathered around as we sat on the floor to hear his story over and over as we grew up. When he came to visit he wouldn't want to leave without a prayer. He had us all get on our knees where he would join us, we would giggle as this was not a normal thing in our home. He left a BIG impression on all his grandchildren who sit and talk about him often. He died on Easter morning and I still remember it to this day. Gwendolyn Sue DeShong - grand daughter
