Norfolk - Augustus G. Alston, an old and highly respected citizen, died Thursday night, November 11, after a brief illness.

For a number of years he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. James Williams of Marshall avenue, where he was stricken. He was a native of North Carolina but had lived here more than 50 years. The deceased was the husband of the late Mrs. James Alston.

The funeral took place at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church Wednesday, November 17 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. E. Ruffin Jones officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Alston was on the custodial staff at Maury High School for 28 years before retiring because of age on January 1,1939, according to Principal A. B. Bristow, who described him as a "highly respected and remarkable man, a fine gentleman who was liked by all with whom he came in contact."

A floral tribute was sent by the Mary faculty. Mr. Bristow, as a mark of respect, notified all Maury teachers that any who wished to attend the funeral would be excused from classes. However, due to a misunderstanding as to the time of the funeral, those who planned to attend it reached the church too late.

Mr. Bristow and Miss Elizabeth Gillespie, a retired Maury teacher, did get to the cemetery in time for the interment services.
