Walter was born in Atlantic City the son of the late J. Howard and Elizabeth Gage Buzby.
He was a lifelong resident of Linwood and served as First Assistant Fire Chief and Councilman. He graduated from Westtown School and Cornell University. He later served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Supply Corps.
Upon separating from the service he returned to work with the Buzby family in the management of operation of the Hotel Dennis in Atlantic City. After the Dennis was sold in 1969, Walter turned to his second interest of fire/arson investigation and established the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Arson Investigation Unit. He retired as Sergeant of Investigators. Additionally, he co-authored two books dealing with Hotel/Motel security and Loss & Crime Prevention, as well as numerous articles on the subject of Security and Fire/Arson Investigation. He was a frequent instructor of Arson Investigation at Atlantic Community College and Atlantic City Police Academy.
He was a lifelong member of the following organizations: Linwood Volunteer Fire Department, Navy League of the United States, International Fire Chiefs Association, International Association of Arson Investigators, New Jersey Fire Chiefs Association, New Jersey Firemans Association, Atlantic County Firefighters Association, and the Policemen's Benevolent Association - Local 77.
Predeceased by his brother, George H. Buzby, he was survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Aino Peterson Buzby; sister, Elizabeth Gage Emack; two sons, Rear Admiral (sel) Mark H. Buzby, USN (his wife Gina) and Captain David G. Buzby, Longport Police Department (and his wife Carol);precious granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Buzby and Tillie, his faithful black Labrador Retriever.
A memorial ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2005 at the Canale Fire Training Center, 5033 English Creek Avenue, Egg Harbor Township.
