The son of Lieut. John Hoar & Elisabeth Coolidge of Lincoln, Mass. Joseph's father John was a minute man that met the enemy at Concord Bridge, the event incident to "the shot heard 'round the world."

Joseph, a tailor, married a Concord widow, Mary Piper, in Concord on May 25th, 1794.
Mary was the daughter of Samuel Piper (of Ipswich) and Mary Buttrick (of Concord), and had been previously married to a British native who was also a tailor, Samuel Lee, by whom she had 5 children, and who had left her a widow in the summer of 1790.

They had two daughters in Concord, one (Harriott, b. 1794) not surviving to her 3rd birthday, and (2nd) Harriott, b. 1796, who became Mrs. Joshua Haynes.

The town record said, "Joseph Hoar, husband of Mary Hoar, died July 27, 1800 Æt. 33", but Joseph was actually due to celebrate that 33rd birthday in only 3 more days.
