Joseph S. Arena, 78, Northeast Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 21, 2012, surrounded by his family. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Passantino Brothers Funeral Home, 2117 Independence Blvd., Kansas City MO 64124, where the Rosary was prayed at 6 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 309 Benton Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64124. Burial followed at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Anthony Catholic Church or NorthCare Hospice.
Joe was born January 22, 1934, in Kansas City, MO, to Albert and Jennie (Arnone) Arena. He joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and retired in 1994 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 and Master Aviator, following 40 years of service. Joe also served for 33 years on the Kansas City, MO, Fire Department, and was a certified flight instructor. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother.
Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pat Arena; his children and their spouses, Julie and Lee Swope, Joe and Jenny Ann Arena, Jennifer Arena; grandchildren, Joe Pat, Michael, and Anthony Swope, Joseph and John Richard Arena; brothers, John Arena, Paul Arena, Charles Arena; and many other relatives and special friends.
