DES MOINES, Iowa Joan Barnhill, 65, formerly of West Liberty died Tuesday Oct. 4, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements.

She was born August 22, 1946 to Fred E. and Norma J. (Prine) Barnhill. After receiving Nursing degrees from the University of Iowa and Minnesota State University, she spent the rest of her life caring for other people, especially children. From her maternal grandmother, Joan learned her love of knitting, crocheting and growing African Violets. In prior years she was active in the Order of Eastern Star.

Left to honor Joan's memory are siblings, Larry (Sue) Barnhill of North Liberty, Bonnie (Brian) James of Oskaloosa and Candy Barnhill of Iowa City; nephews Tyler, Forrest; niece Jaclyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant siblings.

Joan,a devoted hot-air balloon spectator, is now enjoying the glow of the globes from her vantage point in the heavens.
