William Emmert DOBBINS
Birth: 30 JUL 1862 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Death: 19 Sep 1914
Burial Date 09/22/1914
Buried: Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia Inquirer, September 22, 1914
"DOBBINS - At Long Branch, N. J., Sept. 19, WILLIAM E. DOBBINS. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services, at his late residence, on Ashbourne rod, Elkins Park, Tuesday, at 2 P. M. Interment in family mausoleum, Central Laurel Hill."

Son of the Philadelphia builder Richard J. Dobbins, William E. Dobbins enlarged
his father's business and added the profession of architect. He first appears in
the Philadelphia city directories in 1886 and continues to be listed there as an
architect through 1896. From 1897 through 1898 he is listed as an executor,
presumably of his father's estate "Ellerslie", which was located on Old York
Road in Cheltenham, PA. On 21 March 1887 the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and
Builders Guide described this role: "Most of our readers know where and what
"Ellerslie" is -- the rural mansion and surrounding estate of 100 acres, of the
well-known builder, Mr. Richard J. Dobbins, situated 8 miles out on the Old York
Road, in Cheltenham; but it may not be so widely known that his son, William E.
Dobbins, having inherited his father's taste for building, and added to that
avocation in the profession of architect, is building, among other things, a
nice business at 1001 Chestnut Street, third floor. Recognized as a chip of
(sic) the old block, his services are sought in the city and country. He is
remodeling the north end of the market house, on the corner of Broad and
Columbia Avenue, into the New Columbia Swimming School and Gymnasium . . ."

William E. Dobbins disappears from the city directories for 1899 and 1900 but
reappears in 1901 as a trustee. By 1904 his occupation is listed as real estate,
but in 1905 he returns to a listing of architect and in 1906 to that of
executor.
