Robert Calhoun Mullins was born in Tennessee in 1837 but came to Graves County, Kentucky, with his parents when he was a small child. He was very active in the Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and a Sunday School superintendent. He was also an active Mason. Through hard work, he increased the original size of his farm near Wingo from less than 100 acres to nearly 400. He married Eliza Hopkins in 1858 and they had six children.
