Dr. Joseph Hughes Shaw came to Santa Rosa in 1913 from Idaho, and...entered the army medical corps in the World war. He served at Camp Lewis and there met Mrs. Frances K. Tyler, the woman who later became his wife.
A skilled surgeon, a highly cultured man and a physician, who despite his mastery of the most modern methods in medical and surgical science, held to the "old fashioned" doctor's habits of making close friends of all his patients. Dr. Shaw leaves a legion of friends in Santa Rosa and elsewhere throughout the county and state.
He stood high in his profession, respected and admired by his colleagues. He was vice-president of the Sonoma County Medical Society and a regular contributor of papers to its deliberations. For two years he served as county physician, and it is said of him that he made his aged and penniless patients there feel as though they were paid patients in a great hospital.
His friendship for Luther Burbank was a beautiful spot in the life of Dr. Shaw. As greatly as he admired and loved the plant master, the plant master admired and loved him. Burbank, whose personal physician Shaw was, called his doctor "my pal" and few among the great personalities who came to call upon the scientist did not meet Dr. Shaw at the same time.

Originally, his ashes were buried under the Cedar of Lebanon tree - which was removed in 1989 - due to root disease.
