Sylvia's parents were John Strohmeyer and Helen Viola (Woolley) Strohmeyer of Waynoka, Oklahoma. Although born in Oklahoma, by the time Sylvia was a teenager the family had migrated to Southern California.
Between 1917 and 1920 she was married to Vester L. Best. The marriage ended in divorce, and no children were born from that marriage. After her divorce, Sylvia worked in Los Angeles as a packer in a candy company.
On June 1, 1921, she married Peter Joseph Egan. Their only child Mary Ellen Egan was born on March 9, 1923. However, five days after the birth of her daughter, she died from Pneumonia which had progressed from a cold she had when she went into the hospital to deliver.
Sylvia died at the young age of 26.
