Following his military service he worked for the Maine Turnpike Authority and for a number of years he lobster fished. For many years, Emmy owned and operated his own trucking company. He also served his community for many years as a member of the Kittery Point Fire Department.

He met and married his loving wife Shirley (Higgins) Brooks and together they made a home in Kittery Point, until her death earlier this year.
