Vonica Y. Cottington was born on November 24, 1923, and passed away on December 13, 2012, at the Covington Heights Golden Living Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Vonica was born on a farm in Charles Mix County, South Dakota to Milo and Elsie (Hronish) Josifek. She attended country school in South Dakota and Iowa through the 8th grade and graduated from Silver Lake High School in Ayrshire, Iowa in 1942. Employed as a bookkeeper at Formers Coop Elevator in Ayrshire from 1943 until 1946 when she married her high school sweetheart Garth C. Cottington on April 3, 1946. Lived on the Cottington farm until 1969 when they moved to Guthrie Center, Iowa. She was employed as the Office Manager of the Guthrie County Iowa Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Insurance until she retired December 31, 1985.
Spent winters in Mission, Texas until 1994 when they moved to Texas year round. She taught swimming pool exercise class at El Valle Del Sol where they lived and also enjoyed all the activities that the community held. In May, 2005 they moved to a Retirement Home in McAllen, TX. When Garth's health began to fail, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD September 2008.
Vonica became a member of the Methodist Church in Iowa in 1941 and continued that membership in Texas and Sioux Falls. She was President of her church women's society in Iowa and President of the American Legion Auxiliary in Iowa. After moving to Guthrie Center, she took up the game of golf and was President of the Women's Golf Association there.
Survivors include her daughter Connie Colwill of Sioux Falls; son Kirk (Elizabeth) Cottington of Cordova, TN; grandchildren Scott (Jodie) Colwill and daughter Sophie of Sioux Falls, Stephanie (Joe) Harmon and children Justin, Chase and Ryleigh of Spearfish, SD, Alissa (Brian) Rich of Palmer, TX, Travis Cottington and his daughters Elizabeth, lzabella and Rozaleigh of Kyle, TX; sister Georgia Kassel of Ayrshire, IA, brother—in—Iaw Greg (Lois) Cottington of Beaumont, TX; several nephews, nieces, cousins and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years Garth Cottington, granddaughter Melanie Cottington, son—in—law Gary Colwill and brother—in—law Lawrence Kassel.
Graveside inurnment services will be held in the spring of 2013 at the Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed Children's Home Society in Sioux Falls, SD.
