James Glen Holman Jr.
MONTROSE - James "Jim" Glen Holman Jr., age 71, passed away Monday, March 14, 2011, at the family ranch south of Montrose. Jim was born on April 6, 1939, to Glen and Vera (Hutchinson) Holman in Mount Pleasant, Utah.
He moved with his parents to Montrose at the age of 1 in 1940. Jim's dad Glen, along with Jim's uncles, Jack, Emory and Burton, purchased the Holman Family sheep ranch from the Kelley's, Jim's future bride's grandparents. Jim grew up and attended school in Montrose, graduating from Montrose High in the spring of 1957. During his school years, he was an active member of FFA. He also played football and wrestled for MHS.
Following high school graduation, he married Dorothy Mae Trone on June 8, 1957. After their marriage that summer, they went to sheep camp, and each summer thereafter, to take care of the family business. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing now and then. Jim and Dorothy raised their family on the 120-acre ranch that had been in both their families for generations. In 1996, they sold the sheep and Jim and his brother Ron raised domestic elk for eight years selling them in 2004. Jim continued to run the family ranch, although they did move from the farmhouse into town in 2007. When he wasn't outside working, Jim occasionally enjoyed a little gambling, following in the footsteps of his mother and grandmother. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1053 and the Colorado Woolgrowers Association.
