James was born in England and immigrated to the U.S. in 1852 with his mother, step father and siblings. His Irish born father died when James was two years of age. James worked in farming and then became a Private in Company H, 87th infantry, Union soldier fighting in the Civil War. He mustered out in Union Mills, Indiana in 1862. After the war, he became a school superintendent of Holton, Kansas High School, Deputy County Clerk, Principal of Wanatah Indiana School, County Superintendent of schools, Plainfield Indiana Superintendent of a boys Reform school, student of law, Attorney of Law, Alderman to Mayor Scott, devoted husband to Sarah Hall-O'Brien and father to Milan Hall O'Brien. James was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, supporter of public education and a member of the GAR. He was known to be good to everyone and a man of tireless energy.
