Marguerite P. "Marmie" (Powers) Penney passed away at the Bear Hill Nursing Center, in Stoneham, on October 31, 2007. She was 86 years of age. Born in Everett to the late James J. & Margaret J. (Collins) Powers, she was raised in Melrose, graduated of St. Mary's Grammar & St. Mary's High School and attended Northeastern University. Marguerite joined the US Marines in 1944 and served as a corporal for 2 years during WWII. Mrs. Penney worked for Stride Rite Shoes for a few years and then in the nursing & administrations departments at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for 23 years. Marguerite was a devoted mother, who volunteered for many years with the Bridge Association in Melrose, helping children learn to read. She was a perpetual member of St. Jude, lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, was a member of the Women's Veterans Association and did volunteer work at the Cefalo Memorial Home in Melrose. Devoted mother of Sharon L. LeBlanc & her husband Richard of Melrose, Roxanne E. Dalzell & her husband Paul of Marblehead, Susan M. Penney & her companion Ray Dube of Wakefield, Lisa M. Howitt & her husband Al of Melrose, Patience P. Penney of Lawrence, Paula N. Penney of Melrose and their father John M. Penney of Saugus. Cherished grandmother of Kimberly, Caitlin, Ryan, Robert & Pamela. Special great grandmother of Brian & Jesse. Caring sister of Edward Powers of Springfield, Marceline Kurzon of Uxbridge, Mary Kalaris of Melrose & the late James, Richard, Thomas & Emmett Powers Sr. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Monday, Nov. 5th, at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose at 9AM. Family & friends invited. Visiting hours Sun. 2-6PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
