Edna Berry Melton celebrated her 100th birthday on September 2, 2012 and returned to our Lord on December 6, 2012. At the time of her passing, she was living in her homeland of Aurora at her loving home of recent years, the Hudson House, where she was cared for with boundless love from those who became her extended family.
Edna was a gifted daughter, wife, mother, sister, granny, great-granny, aunt and friend. Her beloved husband, Bill, preceded her in death in 1993. Their beautiful marriage of 62 years was blessed by a devoted and loving son, Jack Melton, who brought them great joy and pride. In 2003, Jack preceded her in death in Phoenix, Arizona where his wife, Neta Sue, currently resides.
Edna, one of five daughters born to Claude and Sarah Berry, grew up in Aurora. Her sisters, Iona Gillmore, Madge Perriman, Frankie Hilton, and Maggie Sweeney preceded her in death. She was extremely close with her sisters and loved their families as her own, including: Jim Gillmore, Linda Gillmore, Sarah Gillmore (deceased), Judy Willard, Joe Lee Hilton (deceased), Peggy Sweeney and niece, Kathleen Marbut. In addition to her only son, Jack, Edna claimed her niece, Judy Willard, as her own daughter. Judy's unconditional love and grace to Aunt Edna reflects the love and grace that Edna gave to others. Throughout the years, Edna and Bill were blessed with the loving kindness of many longstanding loyal neighbors and friends including Valerie Wise Kelsey, as well as Bobby and Jane Kurth and Fred and Connie Baum, all of whom provided unconditional support and loving care to Edna during her end of life.
Her grandchildren, a deep fulfillment of joy and love, include Jennifer Melton, Esq. of Phoenix, Arizona; Dr. Stephen Melton and his wife, Lisa, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and her great-grandsons, Jack Melton (6) and Zach Melton (2) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Yearly summer trips to visit Granny and Pa on the Melton Farm fostered a relationship that few grandchildren have with their grandparents. Into their adulthood, Edna became not only their granny but also their friend, serving as a source of inspiration in their lives.
Edna was a teacher by profession, receiving her teaching certificate at an early age. She always delighted in her students, including Senator Emory Melton, brother to Bill Melton, who would go on to become her husband. Bill and Edna initially met after Bill's offer to drive her home one snowy afternoon upon picking up his brother, Emory, from school. Her first teaching experience was at the Star School in McDowell. She was honored when the Star School became a historical site at The School of the Ozarks. She was an active community leader, faithfully serving at the Aurora United Methodist Church and the Aurora Community Hospital.
Edna, above all, will be remembered for the faith she exemplified in her daily life. She was a devoted Christian, daughter, wife, mother, sister, granny, great-granny, aunt and friend. Edna was a blessing on earth and now a blessing in heaven. She will forever be a source of strength and inspiration to us all. As such, her life is eternal and her love immortal.
Memorial services were held on December 10 at the Aurora United Methodist Church and Edna was laid to rest at Osa Cemetery under the direction of Peterson Funeral Home. (Obituary published in The Aurora Advertiser on Friday, December 14, 2012)
