Mary was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 13, 1851 to Alexander and Mary Isabell McKillop.

When she was 3 months old, her family immigrated to the United States. Starting out in the Washington D.C. area, they moved around following the coal industry. When Mary was about 12 years old, the McKillop family settled in Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, where her father continued to work in the coal industry.

About 1870 Mary and Edwin Butterworth were married at a ceremony held in Fall Brook, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

In 1875, they became residents of Chester Hill, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.

Mary and Edwin had 16 children, 8 sons and 8 daughters, raising 12 children to adulthood. At the time of Mary's death on June 30th 1934, she was survived by 11 of her children, 44 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and her brother John McKillop.
