When she was 3 months old, her family immigrated to the United States. Starting out in the Washington D.C. area, they moved around following the coal industry. When Mary was about 12 years old, the McKillop family settled in Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, where her father continued to work in the coal industry.
About 1870 Mary and Edwin Butterworth were married at a ceremony held in Fall Brook, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
In 1875, they became residents of Chester Hill, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
Mary and Edwin had 16 children, 8 sons and 8 daughters, raising 12 children to adulthood. At the time of Mary's death on June 30th 1934, she was survived by 11 of her children, 44 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and her brother John McKillop.
Mary's obituary, in the July 5, 1934 edition of Clearfield Progress, notes that she "seemingly, never left an opportunity to do a good act pass by." Mary was deeply mourned by her family. ~cbb
