A funeral service for George H. Styers, 89, of Newark, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Second Baptist Church, 19 W. National Drive, with the Rev. Gary Boggs officiating. Burial will follow in Moundview Cemetery, Mount Vernon. Mr. Styers, a member of Second Baptist Church, died April 4, 2000 at the Heath Nursing and Convalescent Center. He was born Aug. 31, 1910, in Danville to the late Theudas Emery and Almeda Bell (shoemaker) Styers. Mr. Styers was a graduate of Danville, where he played football and remained an avid football fan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was a former member of the American Legion. He was previously employed by Gutridge Coal and was self-employed as a painter who painted interiors and exteriors of homes all over Licking County. He is survived by a daughter, Margaret Russell of Columbus; a son, Ralph Styers of Conroe, Texas; eight grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his his wife, Marcella (Proper) Styers on May 16, 1952; and by 1 brother and 6 sisters.
