He was the oldest son of Samuel Ater and Nancy Sealock, born and raised in Deer Creek, Pickaway, OH.

He married Mariah Matilda "Maria" Hines on 8 Mar 1847 in Pickaway, OH. They had 3 children: William "Willis", Tabitha and Mirinda. Mariah died on 21 Jul 1854 in Deer Creek, Pickaway, OH

He married 2nd to Elizabeth A Hines on 20 Feb 1855. They had 8 children: Martha Jane, Mary Emma, Matilda "Tillie", Elmer Lawrence, Millard Fillmore, Channing Melvin "Charles", Albert William, and Lilly Florence.

Military:

23 Jul 1862 He was a Private assigned to the 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (Co A90th OVI) at Camp Circleville, Pickaway, OH

13 June 1865 He was released with disabilities at the age of 38. His head had been injured by a bullet and he also had problems with his lungs, Kidneys and eyes.

He died at the age of 52, leaving a widow and six children still living at home.
