Wally Varner was a famous pianist from the 40s, 50s, and 60s era who served as accompanist for such groups as the Melody Masters, the Homeland Harmony Quartet, and the Blackwood Brothers. Wally succumbed to a rare disease named myelofibrosis which attacks the bone marrow. Wally fought the disease for well over a year. He was 78 years of age and would have been 79 on January 13.

Wally was most known for his years as pianist for the renowned Blackwood Brothers during the late 50s and early 60s. His style of piano playing has been copied by scores of pianists over the years, and he was a hero to many pianists over the past 45 years.

Wally and his wife, Polly, have resided in Winter Haven, FL for many years, and for the last 40 years, since his retirement from the Blackwood Brothers, Wally has served as pianist for a few of Winter Haven's larger churches. During the first several years of the Bill Gaither video tapings, Wally was one of Bill's most popular performers.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 3. Final arrangements have not yet been determined.

Wally's passing has saddened family, friends, and fans. Southern Gospel music has lost a great legend, and many have lost a great friend.
