June Rose Elizabeth Shumway Mayes, 73, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of RR3, Towanda, passed away peacefully on Nov. 4, 2012.
From the moment of her birth on June 14, 1939, at a farm on Patton Hill Rd., Towanda, she was known only by her nickname, "Pete." She was the youngest daughter of the late Durland W. and Fannie Melissa Campbell Shumway. She attended elementary schools in Athens and graduated from Towanda High School. In 1959, she was married to Stanley M. Mayes of Niagara Falls, N.Y. They lived in New York state for several years but then moved to Arizona in 1972. Pete loved the warm weather. She was a real homemaker and enjoyed keeping a beautiful home.
Pete was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and two brother in laws; Wilma (Billie) and her husband Willard Brown, Barbara (Bobbie) Wilson, Thomas Jacobs, and a brother, Durland Karl (Bud) Shumway.
Pete is survived by her husband, Stanley Mayes at home; their child, Geoffrey M. (Lisa) Mayes and six grandchildren, Doran, Madalyn, Alexandria, Landon, Taylor and Violet, of Arizona, one sister, Jacqueline (Jac) Jacobs of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; a brother in law, Walter E. Wilson of Arizona; a sister in law Sara Shumway of Towanda; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2013 at Mountain Lake Cemetery, where she will be buried next to her beloved brother, Bud
