In 1853 Caroline entered the Academy at Platteville in the first year of its existence, to prepare herself for the profession of teaching which she was very successful. She then returned to Philadelphia to remain seven years, at the end of which time she again came west and resided with the family at Galena, Ill.
When in the prime of life an illness overtook her, from which she never fully recovered, and she was compelled to give up all work, and returned to the home of early childhood, where she spent the remainder of her life.
A long part of her life was spent in suffering and frailty, but without murmur or complaint, fully resigned to the Divine Will. She passed away in the full assurance of faith at the home of Mrs. McNett on August 3, 1914. She was a woman of fine character and strong impulses. A devoted Christian, and member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held from the family residence, conducted by the Rev. J. Hardcastle, and attended by a large number of friends and relatives. The remains were interred at Elk Grove.
