As a young man, he lived near Hawley, Minnesota. His parents died when he was very young. He had four brothers (Magnus, Jacob, Ole and Edward) and two sisters (Margaret and Petra). After his parents died, he and his brother Edward were cared for by an older sister. The other two brothers were old enough to care for themselves.

Ida and Andrew both lived about two miles north of Butte, North Dakota in Cottonwood Lake Township, which is how they became acquainted. The were married October 30, 1905. In 1909, they left their homestead and moved to Fosston, Minnesota. Myrtle (Jacobson/McNamara) didn't know why they decided to move there.
Andrew did have a brother ,Ole, living in that area so that may have been the reason. Myrtle remembers seeing Ole just once while they lived there. She remembers it as being a beautiful area.
Their farm in Fosston was located about two miles out of town. Myrtle remembers her and her brothers Wilmer and Clarence walking into town for supplies.

In 1916, Andrew and Ida sold the farm and moved back to Balfour, North Dakota, where Andrew purchased 220 acres of land. Balfour was a thriving community at that time. They had some bad years due to drought conditions and grasshopper infestations of crops but always managed to have enough food by raising chickens, pigs, milking cows and big gardens.

Ida died in 1996 after a long lingering illness diagnosed as tuberculosis. It was a very difficult time for Myrtle as she was about 17 years old and helped care for her dying mother. The family stuck together and all the children finished school.

In 1936, Andrew traded land with their family physician and relocated about 11 miles south of Butte, North Dakota. This land was much more productive and there was a lot of pastureland for cattle. Andrew enjoyed his years there. He passed away in 1951 and was laid to rest alongside Ida in Balfour, North Dakota cemetery.

Andrew's mother died of asthma and his father was accidentally killed when a load of grain tipped over on him.
