In 1860, he was a laborer living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 2" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served at the rank of private with the McCreary Independent Company September 11 - 25, 1862, during the Antietam crisis. He then enlisted in Harrisburg September 13, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 14 at as a private with Co. I, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

He married Mary Ann unk. and fathered Albert (b. @1870). In 1890, lived in Hauvers, Frederick County, Maryland.
