James Mathews
James Mathews was born in about 1833 in in Edgerton, Williams County, Ohio. The 1860 Census from Ohio shows that James Matthews was 27 years old and lived with his brother John Alexander Mathews and his family. Their mother, Jane Kearns was also noted on the document as living with them. James Mathews must have traveled west with them to Nebraska. He died of typhoid fever in 1863 and is buried in the Bedford Cemetery, Howe, Nemaha County, Nebraska. His parents were John Mathews, Sr. and Jane Kearns Mathews. He has one sibling that were found on records.
Special Note: Many years ago, while searching for the oldest graves in the Bedford Cemetery, Howe, Nemaha County, Nebraska, there were several small flat gravestones found that were all in a line. These were likely the six members of the Mathews family who died from July-December in1863 of typhoid fever. Since these individuals were buried about 160 years ago and are likely the first known burials in Bedford Cemetery, these stones haven't yet been found again in recent years. This is common in old cemeteries when the graves are so old that they have been hard to locate because they have been buried by decades of dirt, sod, grass clippings, lost records, and time. Their burials may be in the areas where other Mathews family members were buried in Plots #43 and # 129.
