Mrs. Brannen was born in Bulloch County on April 8, 1921. She was the daughter of Maude Lena Byrd Mixon and Charlie Michael Mixon. She had one sister, Mildred Catherine Mixon, who died as a child. She also had seven half-sisters and four half-brothers, all of whom also preceded her in death.
On October 28, 1939, she married Floyd Brannen, and over the years they had four children: Nadyne, Mary Elizabeth, Floyd Wendell, and Phillip Michael. Together they became a hard-working and well respected farm family in their southern Bulloch County community.
A lifelong resident of Bulloch County, Mrs. Brannen attended grade school at Ogeechee School and then went to Warnock School, which was near Middleground Primitive Baptist Church. During this time, she walked to school with the children in the Ben Rushing family, who were like real family to her all of her life.
Mary Maude Brannen had an award-winning smile, a genuine love of people, and a gentle manner throughout her life. A Christian lady, she loved family and friends, and nothing pleased her more than cooking for them. Family and friends alike knew that if you visited Mrs. Brannen on Sunday afternoon, you could not leave without having a piece of cake, a homemade doughnut, or her well known dark pecan pie. She treasured family outings to Tybee Island, the last of which she enjoyed from a wheelchair; the Ogeechee Fair and the fair parades; a variety of music, especially gospel; and singing songs solo or along with family and friends.
Mrs. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings; and a grandson, Lance Kipling Brannen. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Floyd Brannen; her daughters and sons-in-law; and her sons and daughters-in-law. Other survivors include her grandchildren and their spouses; and her great-grandchildren, and her sister-on-laws.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459 or the Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Mr. Jappy Akins, 4551 Bella Terra Road, Brooklet, Ga. 30415.
