BIO for MARTHA ROENA (nee MUDD) ROGERS

Martha Roena (nee Mudd) Rogers was the first cousin, once removed, of President Abraham Lincoln.

Her mother, Elizabeth Ann Lincoln (b. 1791) was the president's first cousin and the daughter of his uncle, Mordecai Lincoln.

Martha's midde name, Roena, is after her mother's sisters midde name, Martha Rowena Lincoln (b. abt 1804). But the w apparently was dropped.

Martha Roena (nee Mudd) Rogers married James Rogers on April 1, 1847 in Scotland County, Mo. The next year, they moved to Iowa and apparently lived there throughout their married life, census and other records show.

James and Martha had at least two children, daughter Nancy Ann (b 1849) and son Horace (b 1851). Both children were born in Iowa.

The 1852, 1854 and 1856 local censuses for Sidney township, Freemont County, Iowa, show James Rogers' household included 2 males and 2 females each time. The 1856 census shows James age 35, Martha age 28, Nancy A. age 7 and Horace age 4.

Other children, an Irene and a Mary E., were attributed to this family by other single sources. But census records seem to verify they only had the 2 children - a boy and a girl, named above.

"Martha Rowena, who was born in Kentucky in 1826, married James Rogers. They had but two children and Martha Rowena died in 1915," quoted from "The Lincoln Kinsman: The Family of the President's Uncle Mordecai," No. 38, pub. 1941, Fort Wayne, Ind.

James was born April 17, 1820 and died in 1876. He preceded his wife in death by 39 years.

Later in life, she lived in Mound City, Holt County, Mo., where she was buried.
