Cherlan was born to Garland and Ethel (Phelps) Coffman. He was educated in Arkansas and Missouri, graduating from School of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. Cherlan served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1976. He married Gerry Henle in Sioux Falls, SD in February of 1965; and, the couple became the parents of four children.
After retiring from the Navy, Cherlan and his family moved to Beresford, SD in 1976. He operated Coffman Electronics and Printing Plus in Beresford.
