BRIDGEWATER -- Patricia Peterson "Pat" Herbes, 85, of Bridgewater died Aug. 26, 2005, at Holly Center of Arbor Glen, after a lengthy illness.
Pat was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Clara Rich Peterson and Earl Everett Peterson. She lived in many locations throughout the West before her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she attended Withrow High School. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree in applied arts. During World War II, Pat worked for Allys-Chalmers, and then for the War Department as a draftswoman. Pat married William Herbes on Sept. 6, 1946, after his return from the Army. The couple moved to Somerville shortly thereafter and then moved to Bridgewater in 1952, where they lived for many years. In 1997, Pat became one of the first residents of Arbor Glen.

Pat was a longtime member of United Reformed Church of Somerville. Concern for the less fortunate was a theme in her life, and until her illness, Pat was involved in numerous church and community activities, including FISH, the Interfaith Hospitality Network and the SHIP ministry. Pat was an accomplished artist, and she particularly enjoyed painting watercolors of natural scenes. Her wintertime creations graced the family Christmas cards for many years.

Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill, who died in 1995.

She is survived by her sons, Dane William Herbes and his wife, Ann, of North Grafton, Mass., and Stephen Earl Herbes and his wife, Elizabeth, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Andrew, Veronica, Christy and Keith, and Keith's wife, Tami; her brother, Dr. William E. Peterson and his wife, Kum Sun Peterson of Ventura, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Mei-Hua Sha Foss Peterson, also of Ventura; her nieces and nephews, Daniel Peterson, Rich Peterson, Margo Kaster and Sabrina Roberts; and her aunt, Editha Hawkes of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The family thanks the staff of Arbor Glen and the Holly Center for their steadfast care and concern for Pat during her long and difficult illness.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at United Reformed Church, with the Revs. Dean Wolbrink and Frank Villerius officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Interment of ashes will be private. Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home in Somerville is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to the Outreach Ministries of United Reformed Church, 100 W. Main St., Somerville, NJ 08876; the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
