Claudia McCann was the daughter of Mary O'Neal and John J. McCann of Ghent, Carroll County, Kentucky. On May 31, 1892 she married the minister of the Ghent Baptist Church, Rev. Ernest Nathan "E.N." Walne. A few months later they left for Japan to become Baptist Missionaries, living several years in Kokura, Fukuoka, before settling in Nagasaki. After over 40 years in Japan they retired and returned to the United States, her husband dying in Berkeley, California in 1936. Ernest and Claudia were the parents of five children: Ernest Spencer Walne, born 1894; Florence Walne Farquhar, born 1895; William Ratliff Walne, born 1897; Herbert M. Walne, born 1901; and Thomas James Walne, born 1905, all of whom are buried in Texas except for Florence. Florence Walne Farquhar became a professor of languages and was a vital figure in organizing the teaching of the Japanese language to United States Navy personnel during World War II. When Florence died in 1946 her cremated remains were interred in her father's grave, with no marker. Claudia had moved to Texas after her husband's death, to be near her sons. When she died in 1948 she was interred in the Hillcrest Mausoleum in Dallas (now Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park), but in 1955 her remains were moved to California and re-interred next to her husband. Her grave is unmarked.
