Katherine Elizabeth Godfrey Godfrey, 90, a native of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County, North Carolina, and resident of the Virginia Peninsula since 1941, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2010, in the Lovingston Healthcare Center at Lovingston, VA, where she was moved three months ago to be closer to her eldest child Bobbie, after battling Alzheimer's disease for the past seven years.

Born January 11, 1920 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, she was the third of the seven children of the late Gilbert Godfrey (1889-1965), a native of Perquimans County, North Carolina, and Mattie Elizabeth White Godfrey (1891-1993), a native of Pasquotank. Her mother lived to the age of 102. On May 15, 1937 at South Mills, North Carolina, Katherine married Garland Stevens Godfrey, a distant cousin, a native of Camden County, North Carolina, who was born March 17, 1914 and died November 27, 1996 after nearly 60 years of marriage.

Katherine and Garland made their home at 636 Sterling Street, Newport News, after 1948, where he was a burner for Newport News Shipbuilding and she a dedicated homemaker, and where she lived until moving to Mayfair House Assisted Living at Hampton, VA in 2003. In August 2006 she was upgraded to nursing home care at Coliseum Park in Hampton, where she resided until transferring to Lovingston three months ago. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church until the past few years, and she and Garland were active members of the Good Sam Camping Club in his retirement.

Katherine is survived by her daughters, Barbara Jean ("Bobbie") Godfrey Newton and husband, Clarence P. ("Buddy") Newton, Jr. of Tyro, Nelson County, VA, and Luanne Godfrey White and husband Charles F. White of Hampton; by her son, Gilbert "Wayne" Godfrey and partner Jerri of Sandy Point, Charles City County, VA; by her grandchildren, David Glenn Newton of Newport News, Bryan Scott Godfrey of Henrico, Jason Paul Godfrey and wife Jessica Abbitt Godfrey of Newport News, and Kimberly Nicole White of Hampton; a great-granddaughter, born exactly one week before her death, Ella Finley Godfrey of Newport News; a sister, Alma Godfrey Rosso of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Marvin Ralph Godfrey of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Roy Fearing Godfrey of California; six nieces, and seven nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth "Hazel" Godfrey Procopio (1925-1983) of Warren, RI, two brothers, Carlton Gilbert Godfrey (1917-1998) and Raymond Myers Godfrey (1921-2006), both of Elizabeth City, NC, and a niece, Lynn Rosso Buechner (1952-2007), of Norfolk, VA.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 21, at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.

The family is grateful to the staffs of Mayfair House, Coliseum Park, and Lovingston Healthcare Center for their care of Katherine the past seven years. She "waited for God" long enough!
