Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 29, at Bentley Funeral Home in Durant, with Rev. Thomas Gehlsen officiating. Music was provided by organist Deb Mohr and vocalist was Henry Bentley. Pallbearers are Jerry Schmudlach, Lester Levien, Bill Thayer, Edwin Johannsen, Mike Hogan and Henry Dusenberry. Burial will be in the Durant Cemetery, Durant, Iowa, with military graveside services provided by the Dixon American Legion Post #353.
George F. Hass was born January 9, 1897, in Bennett, the son of John and Amelia (Johansen) Hass. He was educated in the Cedar County schools. He proudly serviced in the United States Army during World War I, attached to the 20th Motor Transport Division. He married Verona Norma Stouffer on December 3, 1919, in Davenport and were the parents of Jean Louise Hass. George and Verona were later divorced. He married Mabel (Mecklenburg) Sebelien on May 19, 1935. Mabel preceded him in death on June 18, 1969. He married Susie E. (Kerrsen) Ellis on October 3, 1970. Susie preceded him in death in 1987. He owned and operated a clothing store in Durant from 1922 to 1934. He then owned a grocery store in Dixon and DeWitt, until retiring in 1951. He served on the Cedar County Election Board for 30 years, the Durant Cemetery Board for 15 years and on the Durant City Council for eight years. He also drove a school bus for the Durant schools, until he was 65 years old. He was a member of the Dixon American Legion Post #353.
Surviving are one step-daughter, Lucille Endorf of Wheatland; and one niece, Florine LeVien of Bettendorf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wives and one step-daughter, Bernice Sebelien.
