Joseph was the son of Isadore and Gertrude (Nellenbach) Linck. His siblings included Nicholas, Isadore, Jr, Gertrude and Lewis. Half-siblings were John, David, William, Michael, Theresa, Aloysius, Peter, Benjamin, Anthony, Rose, Matilda, Caroline, and Laura since Francesca (Dorse) Linck is their mother.

The Michigan, Deaths and Burials Index, 1867-1995 states the birth year is 1854, however, the 1855 New York census, as well as the 1860 & 1870 Federal census, has his birth about 1851. The birth year of 1851 is confirmed by Joseph's baptism on April 1, 1851 at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Father Jacob Moschal presided. The godparents were Joseph Nellenbach and Catherine Linck. Today, the baptism record is housed at St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden, Lewis County, New York.
