Jacob C. Shear was born in Coeymans, Albany, New York to Stephen and Geritaje TenEyck Shear November 18,1829. His family moved to Junius New York where he was raised. He was married to Harriet Stewart in 1849. They had one daughter in 1850 named Frances Shear.
He married Elizabeth Reading and they had two sons.

Jacob and Elizabeth left Junius New York in 1858 and spent a winter in Niles, Michigan with his sister Garrita and Anson Lisk. This is where son Herbert was born before they continued on to settle on the 160 acres of Section 5 Onarga Township Illinois in the spring of 1859.
In 1861 Jacob joined the 9th Illinois Calvary Co. M that was formed at Onarga, Illinois . Basic training was done at Camp Douglas on the south side of Chicago. The 9th Illinois was dispatched to Cairo,Illinois. Jacob earned to position of 1st Lieutenant and was acting Captain during a time of Capt. Beckett was recovering from wounds. He participated in several skirmishes in Arkansas and Tennessee. He fulfilled his 3 year term and elected Captain but resigned to stay home with his ailing wife. Elizabeth passed away in 1865.
Jacob married Sarah Brown from near Chatsworth, Illinois. She was the daughter of Thomas Yardley Brown who was a pioneer settler of Germantown Township and a banker in Chatsworth. They had 3 children.
