John is the only known Key Family member in Alabama who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in Co. K, 3rd Reg. US Inf under Capt. Custer Bukley. John first served in the CSA, a member of the 28th Alabama, Company E. and was captured in his first battle. He was shipped to a prison camp in Illinois where he was offered the chance to enlist in the Federal Army rather than stay in prison. He was sent west to fight the Indians where he served in Co. K, 3rd Regiment. He was discharged after the war at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

John was the son of John Martin Key and Mary Snow. Siblings were Thomas and Mary Key. John married first Charity Elizabeth Wood and their children were Whitty Susan, Almeda, Carol Rice, Sara, Mary, Robert Powers, Samuel Lee, Manerva, Edward Thomas, Angeline Elizabeth, Lucy Prudence and John Martin Key. John married second Fannie Clements.
