Mary King was born 1868 in Falkland, Pitt Co, daughter of farmer and merchant, Capt. John King, II and his (2nd) wife, Elizabeth "Eliza/Bettie" Cobb. Her father had married (1st) to Martha Joyner in 1855 and had 1 child; he married (2nd) to Elizabeth "Eliza/Bettie" Cobb in 1860 and by her had 6 children. After his 2nd wife died in 1872, he married Mary's mother in 1876 and had 7 known children. Capt. King was was Captain of militia in 1860, and during the Civil War he was assessor of taxes "in kind". After the death of his 2nd wife, Capt King married (3rd) Sarah Frances "Fannie" Bynum in 1875.

Mary is descended from prominent Pitt County families, being the paternal grandchild of John King Sr. ((1797-1845) and Allie May Vines (1803-1883); and maternal grandchild of Allen Bynum (1809-1872) and Mariah T. May (ca. 1814-1893).

Mary married Jefferson Loderick Fountain (about 1891) a local merchant, and they raised a family of 8 known children in Falkland:

* Mary Lillian Fountain (1892-1984)
* Judge Jefferson L. Fountain, Jr. (1894-1973).
* Elizabeth Cobb Fountain Barrow (1895-1984).
* Pearl Fountain Mallette (1897-1992).
* Theodore King Fountain (1899-1958)
* Selma Fountain Cosgrove (1901-1960)
* Ruth Fountain (ca. 1905)
* Olive Fountain (1908-1934)

Sometime after 1900, the family removed to Raleigh, where Jefferson continued in the mercantile business. Mary was widowed in 1927 when her husband died at age 66. She survived him 9 years, passing in 1936 at age 68.
