PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - J.C. (John Charles) Ball of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Marquette, Mich., passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012.

J.C. was born May 17, 1946, to George A. and Gwendolyn M. Ball in New York, N.Y. He spent much of his young life in New York, Washington, D.C., Maryland and New Jersey. After his father passed away his mother and brothers moved to Marquette, Mich., where his mother had been raised. This is where J.C. met his future wife, Cathy Kellner. They were married in 1969 and have one son, Jason.

J.C. attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette and received a B.A. in Industrial Education. J.C. tired of shoveling snow and he and Cathy moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1974. He spent 31 years educating students in Charlotte County, retiring in 2005.

J.C. was a gentle, curious, witty and kind man. He enjoyed the beauty around him and adapted well to his life in Florida. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing and became a master wood worker. However, there was always something special about Marquette and he returned most every summer.

John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cathy; son, Jason (Allison) Ball of Seffner, Fla.; brother, George (Joy) of Hampstead, N.C.; sister, Jackie Riley of Port Townsend, Wash.; mother-in-law, Ruth Kellner of Marquette; brother-in-law, Loren Ameen of Ishpeming, Mich.; sister-in-law, Julie (Leonard) Parker of Marquette; brother-in-law, Mike (Elissa) Kellner of Mack's Inn, Idaho; aunt, Katherine (Ball) Engels of Tucson, Ariz.; and many cousins, ne-phews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gwendolyn Ball; brothers, Edward and James; father-in-law, Vernon Kellner; and sister-in-law, Bobbi Ameen.

The family would like to thank Hospice for making it possible for J.C. to remain at home for the last 10 months during his illness. They would also like to thank all of the wonderful friends, neighbors and family members that have shown J.C. such love over the years.

There will be an open house in celebration of J.C.'s life at Cathy and J.C.'s home in Port Charlotte on December 8, 2012, from one until five. This summer, when the snow and ice of Marquette turn to flowers and sunshine, J.C. will make his final trip to Marquette. A graveside service will be held at the Park Cemetery in Marquette. The service will be officiated by family relative, Charles Kendall, of Texas.

There will be a luncheon following the service and in J.C's fondest memory - Togo's will be served.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider making a donation to a charity of your choice in J.C.'s name. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.kays-ponger.com, the Kays-Ponger Funeral home assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
