Alfred L. Champlin, age 86, of Lake Rd., Conneaut, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2006, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. Born August 18, 1920, the son of the late Oren E. and Anne Charlotte (Michaels) Champlin. He was a graduate of Rowe High School, the class of 1939. Mr. Champlin sailed on the Great Lakes for 5 years before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Union Carbide in the maintenance dept. for 32 years, retiring in 1977. Alfred was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion, Cowel Post 151. He also served as Commander and Advisor of the Sons of the American Legion, and for many years with the Honor Guard and Rifle Squad. He enjoyed working on his yard and garden, painting, woodworking, playing cards and Scrabble, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 16 years; two daughters; one son; one step-daughter; one step-son; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two brothers. Alfred was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Vera Mae (Wheeler); his parents; four brothers, Milton and Martin, in infancy, and Fred and Arlin Champlin; two sisters, Pauline Hoover and Esther Champlin; one son, Terry Lee, in 1979; and one great-grandson, Terry Michael Champlin, in 1991.Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut, Ohio, with family friend Rev. Shirley Stoops-Franz officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.Friends may call at the funeral home today, October 24, 2006, from 6 to 9 p.m., and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Amboy United Methodist Church or Conneaut Rescue Squad, Station #3. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
